Gnothi Se Afton means know thyself in Greek. The aim of the guild is not only to bring a group of people together, who enjoy playing an online game, but is also to acknowledge everyone’s strengths and make them stronger. On a broader scale, the guild is also a venue for sharing experiences and learning from those exchanges.

Gnothi evolved out of an initial attempt to create a strong guild with dedicated players. That guild eventually failed because some of its key members didn’t know themselves to know their own limitations or engage in honest communication. The hope for this guild is constant dialogue and honest self-representation.

A little background on the name: Gnothi Seauton (spelled Se Afton for the sake of English-speakers everywhere) was etched into a cornice on the Temple of Apollo at The Oracle of Delphi. In the Greek world, the only way to honor those around you was to engage in complete self-reflection, especially in terms of the motivating forces behind one’s political decisions. Otherwise, not doing so could herald downfall for you and your fellow countrymen. The Oracle itself was a place to divine direction, but without knowing where one begins, one can not know one’s desired destination. Therefore, it can be said that knowing one’s self not only serves the greater good for those around you, but also for you in particular to determine your path in life.

Gnothi desires those players who wish to engage in every aspect of the Guild Wars world. It is an adult (18+) Kurzick, mostly PvE, guild aimed at the full enjoyment of the game, as well as fully enjoying the presence of each individual player. Each person brings energy to the guild, and only by harnessing that energy can the game be explored to its full capacity. We are allied to other guild’s with similar, yet not identical, ethics. We support our allies as best as we can—questing, missioning, alliance battling, etc.--with them as often as possible. However, please note that the concentration of this guild is mainly PvE.~~Maia
